Role guide: tech teardown

Power down and pack the tournament's electronics after close, so the next event finds every box complete.

Your job: power down the tournament's electronics and pack each piece back where it belongs. That means the Raspberry Pi displays, the Tournament Manager laptop and the event network. The teardown crew handles the fields and tables; you handle everything that plugs in.

What the day looks like

You start when the last award is done. Tech teardown is setup in reverse:

  1. The displays. Each Pi, its power supply and its cable go back into the box with its label.
  2. Tournament Manager. The laptop is shut down and goes back into its rack bag.
  3. The network. The rack bag is switched off and closed up.

Then the boxes and rack bags go back to the trailer.

Activity level is moderate. You carry cases back to the trailer and coil a lot of cords.

Your mission

Wait for the Event Partner. Tournament Manager holds the event's results, and the Event Partner may still need it after the last award. Don't shut anything down until they say so.

Match each device to its labelled box. The boxes are colour-coded: blue is elementary school, red is middle school, and green is skills. A Pi in the wrong box sends the next setup crew hunting.

Pack it ready for next time. Coil cables loosely and put every part back in the box it came from. The next tech setup crew should open each box and find exactly what it says.

Leave nothing behind. Walk the room once more before you go: under tables, behind screens, at every outlet.

Be awesome at it

Count the power cords and strips as you collect them. The venue's are easy to mix up with ours.

If something is broken or missing, tell the Event Partner before you leave, so it is fixed before the next event rather than found at it.

When problems happen

If a box is missing a part, don't swap one in from another box. Tell the Event Partner what is missing and where.

If you are ready before the Event Partner is finished, coil the cords and stack the empty boxes, and wait for them before you switch anything off.

Who this suits

No experience required. If you are tidy and like seeing a job finished properly, you will be good at this.
