Who runs team registration?

Team registration is run by VEX Robotics and the Global Robotics & Science Foundation, the organizations behind the VEX IQ program. gainingSTEAM hosts and supports VEX IQ tournaments here in Nebraska, so our job is to point coaches to the right place and help your team get started.

This page is a short summary to reduce the guesswork. For the complete, authoritative, step-by-step instructions, always defer to Global's official guide:

Global Robotics: Registering or Renewing a Team →

Register or renew?

Both happen in the Team Registration Wizard at events.vex.com. Pick the one that matches your team:

Register a new team

For a brand-new team that has never competed before. VEX assigns a new team number.

Renew a returning team

For a team coming back for another season. Renewing keeps your team number along with its competition history, rankings, and awards — so renew whenever you can.

Before you start

Have these ready to make registration quick:

  • An account on events.vex.com for the coach or administrator who will manage the team.
  • Adult contacts (18 or older), each with their own email address — a Primary Coach, a Financial Contact, and an Organization / Administrative Contact. Shared email accounts aren't allowed.
  • Your organization's physical address.
  • An emergency phone number reachable during competitions.
  • A payment method for the registration fee.
  • Your students' dates of birth — use the age checker below to confirm whether each one competes as Elementary or Middle School.

How registration works

Once you're in the wizard at events.vex.com, you'll move through these steps:

  1. Log in at events.vex.com.
  2. Choose your action — "Register a Team" for a new team or "Renew Teams" for a returning one.
  3. Select your program — choose VEX IQ.
  4. Organization information — confirm eligibility and enter the address where your organization operates.
  5. Team information — team base number (assigned for new teams, kept when renewing), emergency phone, and grade level.
  6. Add required contacts — Organization / Administrative, Primary Coach, and Financial Contact (a Secondary Coach is optional).
  7. Complete the team profile — team name and robot name are required; the rest is optional.
  8. Checkout — review your team(s) and pay, or hold to pay later. Registration isn't complete until checkout finishes.

Good to know

  • Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, team registration fees are payable to VEX Robotics.
  • Most team information can be updated after you register.
  • Keep your invoices and confirmation emails for your records; a VEX W-9 is available at forms.vex.com.
  • An organization can register more than one team.

Elementary or Middle School? Check a student's age

VEX IQ sorts students into Elementary School and Middle School divisions by date of birth. Enter a student's birthday to see where they fit for the current season.

Checked right here in your browser — nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Enter a date of birth to see the student's competition level.

Age limits are set by the VEX IQ Level Up game manual (anchored to VEX Worlds 2027) and change each season. This tool is guidance only — VEX Robotics' manual is the official source.
