What is VEX IQ robotics?

A quick introduction to the VEX IQ competition for students in grades K-8.

VEX IQ is a robotics competition designed for elementary and middle school students (grades K–8). Teams design, build, and program a robot to complete challenges in a game that changes each season.

How a competition works

  • Teamwork Challenge — two teams work together on the same field to score as many points as they can in a timed match.
  • Robot Skills — a team runs its robot solo, both driver-controlled and fully autonomous (programmed), to post its best score.
  • Judging — teams talk with judges about their engineering notebook and their design process; awards recognize more than just match scores.

What students learn

Beyond robotics, students practice teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance — the STEAM skills that carry well beyond the competition field.
